Custom Positions

What are they?

Custom positions allow you to manually define a position by supplying historical price information. Custom positions can be used to chart and compute performance for anything: Housing and real estate prices, art, antiques, baseball cards, Beanie babies and Star Wars figurines. You can also use custom positions for stocks that Icarra does not track.

How to use Custom Positions

Custom positions can be used for both Simple and Detailed portfolios. To create a custom position navigate to the Edit Transactions tab of your portfolio. Click the Add Custom Position link under the Add Transaction section. Next enter the position name and click Add Position.

Next you will be brought to the custom transaction page. From here you can add three types of transactions:

  • Buy: Used to purchase something or to add money to the position. If the number of shares is greater than 0 this will also be used to create a Data Point. If the number of shares is 0 then money will go into the position without increasing its value (an expense).
  • Sell: Used to sell something or to remove money from the position. If the number of shares is greater than 0 this will also be used to create a Data Point. If the number of shares is 0 then money will be remvoed from the position without reducing it svalue (a distribution).
  • Data Point: Used to calculate the value of the position. Enter the value for one share. Intermediate values are interpolated linearly (ie, a straight line is drawn from each data point).

Buy and Sell transactions behave exactly like they would for a regular position. In a Detailed portfolio they will affect the cash holdings.
